An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 hit Indonesia today, which has also activated a tsunami warnings for a time throughout the area. The earthquake’s epicenter was located 154 km (96 miles) northwest of Kota Ternate, Indonesia. But the major earthquake was felt at 10:31 AM Local time Saturday (9:31 PM EST Friday). This was reported by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The earthquake had an initial magnitude of 7.3 but was later downgraded slightly by the USGS. Tsunami warnings were issued for Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands and other regions but were dropped afterwards. A tsunami wave of 3 centimeters (3.54 inches) (3 feet) was reported on the island of Jailolo.
However, there were no reports of damage or injuries.
Four strong aftershocks — 5.9, 4.8, 4.7 and 5.0 magnitude were also felt respectively.
