An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 has struck in the South Pacific, which is about 300 kms west northwest of Tonga and 141 kms north east of Ndoi Island in Fiji. According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake was 417 kms deep. There is no reports of injury or building damage as of then.
According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, there was no immediate tsunami alert after the earthquake.
Tonga area rests on the infamous Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of frequent seismic activity due to collisions between continental tectonic plates.
